Learning Your Way Back To Work
Work Based Learning for Adults (WBLA) in England and Wales , Training
for Work (TFW) in Scotland is available locally through
Skills and Learning Councils (in England and Wales) and Local
Enterprise Companies (in Scotland),
and their Training Providers (it may also have its own local
name). Work Based Learning for Adults is a positive way to
train
or gain valuable work
experienced that is directly related to the job you want
to do & aims to:
- help unemployed people move into sustained employment
- help long term unemployed people to gain the occupational skills needed to fill recognised local skill shortages and;
enable long term unemployed people to make a success of self-employment
Basic Employability Training is available for people who need extra help before they start job related training. Similar training is available in Scotland through TfW.
If you are aged 25 or over and have been out of work for six months or more you may be eligible. If you are aged 18-24 and have a disability and are receiving benefits other than Jobseekers
Allowance you may be eligible to join WBLA.
You may be invited to apply as part of your interview with an Adviser or as an associate member if you are attending a Programme Centre. You can also apply directly if you are aware of the Training Providers in your locality.
On joining WBLA you will agreed a training plan to meet your specific needs. Your plan might involve job specific training, work towards a National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) or Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQ) in Scotland or actual work experience it could be a mixture of all these.
" Do you have to be out of work for six months before joining the programme ?"
Not necessarily; certain people can join earlier for example:
- if you have a disability
- if you need basic skills training or help with your spoken English
- if you are returning to the Labour Market after, for example, looking after a child or other relative
- if you are a lone parent
- if you are subject to a large scale redundancy as designated by the SLC/LEC
- if you have been in HMF and have either begun resettlement leave, terminal leave or have been continuously unemployed since discharge
- If you are unable to train full-time because of personal circumstances, you may be able to train part-time. While you are training you will receive an allowance, equivalent to any benefit you are entitled to, plus £10 per week, and perhaps help with your expenses such as travel and childcare.
If you're offered a job before you complete your training, you can take the job and may be able to complete your agreed Training Plan.

Are you a qualified teacher? Do you want to return to the classroom?
Would you like to resume one of the most challenging and inspiring careers
there is?
You may have left teaching to take a break from working, have a family
or experience another career. Many teachers do. And many return. In 2001/02,
13,000 teachers returned to the classroom. If you are thinking of returning,
there is plenty of help to guide you on your way and ease your passage back
into teaching.
Would you like to meet an experienced teacher to talk about the many training
opportunities available?
The TTA organises events across the country that give you the chance for
an informed discussion. ITT providers also attend some events.
Telephone the event organisers nearer the time to confirm details . Please

If you are changing career you may want some independent advice from a
careers adviser. Regional careers advisers (RCAs) are based in every region
of the country. They offer professional and informed advice to people considering
teaching as an alternative career.
Please
call the Teacher Information Line for more details on 0845
6000 991 (English speakers) or 0845 6000 992 (Welsh
