What is Lifelong Learning ?
Learning and life chances have always been linked
never more than today. Changing life and work patterns and information
technology reach all areas of everyday life. The jobs of now and the
future call for high skills and qualifications, and the capacity to learn
through our lives.
Nationally, gaps have grown between those who have
benefited from learning and those who have not. Locally, Sunderland
needs to retain and increase its population and can do this by improving
and increasing opportunities for all to learn and developing high
skills, including vocational, technical, caring and craft skills. Everyone
has talents and we need to make the most of them all. Educational
achievement is the passport to individual and City economic and social
well being.
The
Library service works in partnership with the e-government unit and
the City College to empower the learning community by supporting, encouraging
and promoting participation in lifelong learning.
It has developed learning centres in six libraries and provided mobile
ICT provision in the coalfields area with the LIAZe vehicle (Libraries
Information Access Zone).
The
six learning centres are: -
The
new library at Houghton also features a
Family Learning Centre.
All
learning centres act as Access Points of the 'LearnDirect' programme, with
the library service being an active partner in the University for Industry
initiative.

Community Development Network
Are you looking for information about other community groups in
the city of Sunderland? For funding advice, training opportunities,
or how to get your voice heard? Do you want to advertise your events,
job vacancies and volunteering community opportunities?
The Sunderland
CDN Network is there to strengthen your organisation,
to link it to others across the city, and potentially to others
regionally,
nationally, and even internationally. Information can be found
within this CDN site from local Sunderland organisations such as
Voices, LSP, Pentagon Partnership, CVS and CDN.
Many of the groups in Sunderland have common interests but unfortunately
work in isolation, as they are not aware of each other’s
existence. This is especially true of smaller groups or organisations
that have no idea where to go for advice or support.
How many times have you wished that you could pick up the phone
and ring someone for advice or support?
The Network will give you the opportunity to do this, you may
be able to get advice on funding, how to organise an event, how
to write a constitution or how to access training from other network
members.
