What is Lifelong Learning - Learning Forums
The
six area Lifelong Learning Forums are:
Washington,
The Coalfields,
Sunderland North,
Sunderland East,
Sunderland West,
Sunderland South
Each of the six Lifelong Learning Forums meet during the first week of
each month. Forum members share information and consider applications to
the Lifelong Learning Fund. This fund consists of £58,000, which is
available annually to local organisations wishing to offer non-accredited
learning to adults.
Special Projects
Each Forum is currently involved in a 'special project'.
The Coalfield Forum
has a team of 5 Community Learning Mentors who are working to engage local
people in learning, with a view to channeling them on to the 'Moving On
Up' Project. This will provide clear pathways to training and employment.
The
East Forum is working with young men aged 19-30 to support them into music,
dance and drama provision.
The North Forum are working to integrate
learners with a disability from Fulwell and Nookside Day Centres and the
Washington Multipurpose Centre
into provision at Wearmouth Community Development Trust.
The Washington
Forum hope to offer these learners additional learning opportunities in
their centres.
Adult Learners' Week
All Forums devise a week of events for Adult Learners' Week which takes
place in the middle of May each year.
Within the forums focus groups reflect key issues and themes
around learning:
- The 14-19 Group - will ensure learning opportunities
are available for 14-19 year olds that match their interests and abilities
and meet the economic needs of the City.
- The Basic Skills Group - will increase participation and achievement in basic skills
provision
- The Family Learning Group - works to expand the number
and range of programmes for families to work together, particularly in
school and community settings
- The ICT Group - looks to integrate ICT into learning
and to improve the ICT skills of all who live and work in the City
- The Participation Group - devises new ways to increase participation in learning, targeting
under-represented groups and communities and supporting learners so that they can
progress and achieve qualifications
- The Labour Market Skills Group - works with employers and uses labour market
information to ensure that the learning and training opportunities available in the City
match existing and emerging skills needs and shortages
